MTV postpones VMAs to make room for showdown between Trump and Harris

The 2024 MTV Video Music Awards have been postponed to avoid overlapping with a presidential debate between candidates Donald Trump and Kamala Harris.

The star-studded ceremony was originally scheduled for September 10 in New York, but will now take place the following evening.

MTV announced the postponement and encouraged fans to tune in to the debate before enjoying “music’s most iconic night.”

The network’s commitment to mobilizing young voters may have influenced the decision to postpone the event, thus avoiding accusations that the network was undermining its civic engagement efforts.

The tension is high because this is the first direct encounter between Trump and Harris in the fight for the White House.

In June, there was significant upheaval in the political landscape when current President Joe Biden dropped out of the race after difficulties with public speaking, giving Harris the Democratic nomination.

As the VMAs postponements hit the news, MTV also revealed the first batch of artists scheduled to perform at the ceremony, including Sabrina Carpenter, Camila Cabello, Chappell Roan, GloRilla and Rauw Alejandro.

With 10 nominations, Taylor Swift will dominate the evening in categories such as Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Collaboration and Best Pop.
