Inside Madonna’s 66th birthday celebrations at a resort in Italy

Madonna celebrated her 66th birthday this week with loved ones in an Italian resort where famous faces are not uncommon.

The pop icon celebrated her special day on Friday, August 16, with a stay abroad accompanied by her two daughters, 11-year-old twins Estere and Stella, and her rumored boyfriend, soccer player Akeem Morris.

During her stay in Italy, Madonna stayed at the Villa TreVille Resort in Positano – the same five-star hotel that Jennifer Lopez booked during an Italian vacation earlier this summer.

The property overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, where rooms can cost up to $2,000 a night, is the former summer residence of director Franco Zeffirelli. Today it is owned by Govind Friedland and run by general manager Martino Acampora.

The resort Villa TreVille was already recommended to PEOPLE by the publisher Positano News, Michele Cinque describes it as “one of the most luxurious resorts in the world, but at the same time very quiet and private.”

During her birthday celebrations over the weekend, Madonna took part in the traditional Italian Ferragosto celebrations, which included a fireworks display over the Amalfi Coast, from the balcony of La Tagliata restaurant in Montepertuso.

The “Like a Prayer” singer and her guests – a group of about 30 people in total – were also invited to an exclusive dinner at the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, a source told PEOPLE.

The culinary experience, prepared by three-Michelin-starred restaurant Quattro Passi and overseen by Chef Vincenzo Castaldo of Villa TreVille, was reportedly inspired by the Mediterranean diet and the culinary traditions of the Amalfi Coast.

According to the source, Quattro Passi chefs Antonio and Fabrizio Mellino designed the menu to suit Madonna’s penchant for simple, Mediterranean-inspired dishes – and used locally sourced ingredients. These ingredients included organic vegetables, seafood specialties from the Sorrento Peninsula, local Menaica anchovies and homemade bread.

Chef specialties served during Madonna’s birthday dinner included mini penne with zucchini and endive garnished with seasoned olives and pine nuts, and bruschetta with Sorrento tomatoes and olives, the source added.

As for other delicacies, according to the source, Madonna and her loved ones were treated to white grouper and red bream from the Gulf with herbs from the local Monte San Costanzo, beef fillet, potato salad, focaccia pizza and eggplant dishes.

Desserts from the Campania region were also available, including rum-topped baba cakes, sfogliatelle, chocolate and coffee profiteroles, and lemon tarts from Sorrento.

Later, around 10:30 p.m., Madonna and her loved ones arrived at an ancient theater in the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, where they attended a performance by the local youth project “Sogno di Volare” (Dream of Flying), funded by Madonna.

They also received a guided tour from park director Gabriel Zuchtriegel.

“The ‘Dream of Flying’ project, so generously supported by Madonna, is of strategic importance for Pompei because it is aimed at the people who live in this wonderful and complex territory, especially young people, making them protagonists of an experience through which we wanted to show that art and culture can really change our lives,” said Zuchtriegel in a press release about the project, which the pop superstar is funding through her Ray of Light Foundation until 2025.
