Director of ‘Alien: Romulus’ reveals clever way to reference ‘Alien: Isolation’

Director of ‘Alien: Romulus’ reveals clever way to reference ‘Alien: Isolation’

Alien: Romulus is in theaters now and fans of the franchise can watch the film to see the many references to previous films in the franchise. Gamers may also spot an interesting reference.

Alien: Romulus The film was directed by Fede Alvarez, who was inspired to create a Foreigner Project after I really enjoyed the acclaimed video game Alien: IsolationFans of the game noticed a subtle hint in an early image from the set that Alvarez shared: an emergency phone that looks just like the one in insulation on the wall. Throughout the film, these phones are seen in several places, and Alvarez has shared that their appearance is by no means random. These phones, which allow players to save their progress, often appear in the game just before a big showdown. As Alvarez explained, the phones in Romulus are there to give the same indication.

“The film is structured in such a way that every time something bad is going to happen, you see a phone“, confirmed Alvarez. “In the game, every time you knew there was a phone involved, you thought, ‘Damn, I’m about to get into a bad situation.’ The same is here. You’ll see them strategically placed throughout the film. When you see the phone, it’s like, brace yourself for impact.”

The director also said in the interview: “Alien: Isolation was what made me realize that Foreigner could be really scary and well done (today). I played it a few years after it came out. Don’t breathe came out. Or was I waiting for Don’t breathe to come out and I played the game. So at that time I thought, “Damn, if I could do something, I would love to Foreigner and scare the audience again with this creature and these environments.’ I played and realized how terrible Foreigner could be if you bring it back to this tone.”

Practical effects were used in Alien: Romulus

Alvarez went to great lengths to capture the tone of the original Foreigner Film and its first sequel, Aliens. This meant that he used as many practical effects as possible rather than relying on CGI. He also chose to mention each of the sequels rather than just pretending that the original two films had been made. This left open the possibility of mentioning other films in the series, even some of the less appreciated installments.

Alvarez co-wrote the screenplay for the film with Rodo Sayagues. The film stars Dailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Isabela Merced, Archie Renaux, Spike Fearn and Aileen Wu.
