At the beginning of the summer, dream pop favorites The Marías released their latest LP, Submarineand songs like “Run Your Mouth,” “No One Noticed,” and “Real Life” were instant catchy highlights. But it’s “Lejos de Ti” that sets the whole project apart from their 2021 debut, CINEMA. It’s a gentler contemplation of separation from a loved one, and bandleader María Zardoya headed to the mountains of Lake Tahoe in California to shoot the arctic music video — and to fully embody the spirit of loneliness as she sings, “El frío, la noche / Siempre me acuerdo de ti / Miles de canciones / Siempre me acuerdo de ti.” (“The cold, the night / I always remember you / Thousands of songs / I always remember you.”) Once again, Zardoya masterfully dissects the pain of love from a new angle, commanding the track with her ethereal vocals drifting longingly through the blizzard, searching for an absent lover.

The Marías performed two nights in a row on stage at the Fox Theater in Oakland last month and paste was there to capture the action. The band played an incredible 27-song set, including everything from “Un millón” to “Love You Anyway” to a rousing cover of the Cardigans’ “Lovefool.” It all culminated in a two-part encore that climaxed with a performance of “Cariño.” Check out our photographer Kris Lori Fuentes Cortes’ gallery of the show below.
