Plains hosts events this weekend to celebrate former First Lady Rosalynn Carter’s birthday

PLAINS, Ga. (WALB) – It was an eventful weekend in Plains as the city continues to celebrate the life and legacy of former First Lady Rosalynn Carter.

On Saturday, August 17, residents gathered in Rosalynn’s childhood garden for the third annual butterfly release.

Those in attendance also had the opportunity to meet the artist who created the sculpture “Dancing Monarchs.” “Dancing Monarchs” was presented to Rosalynn on her 95th birthday in 2022.

The sculpture depicts 18 monarch butterflies resting on eight stalks protruding from the ground and is a tribute to Mrs. Carter’s birthday, August 18th.

The celebrations continued on the other side of town at Hudson House, where a formal opening ceremony was held.

“We’re going to call it the Rosalynn Carter Art Center at Hudson House. We just thought it was very fitting for her because she did such wonderful work for all of us,” said Kim Fuller, executive director of the Friends of Jimmy Carter Foundation.

According to the Friends of Jimmy Carter Foundation, the Hudson House is the oldest house in the area. Volunteers spent this summer restoring it and will continue to work on the house until the arts center is fully open again.

On Sunday, August 18th, at 10 a.m., Maranatha Baptist Church will hold a special service in honor of Rosalynn’s birthday.
