Date for new art installation changed

Due to wet and rainy weather, the planned installation of Hanna Jubran’s sculpture “Midsummer” had to be postponed to August 21st.

An email from Mary Rose, Planning Director/Main Street Director for the City of Cliton Planning and Development Department, stated, “Due to the rain that has wet the ground, we unfortunately have to reschedule the installation date to Wednesday, August 21st at 10am.”

Rose explained that the sculpture plazas at both All-America Park and the Sampson Community College campus were created as part of Clinton’s 2018 economic development plan.

“The Clinton Economic Development Plan Committee has seen other communities such as Goldsboro and Fayetteville use rotating sculptures to attract the attention of visitors and citizens and provide them with vibrancy,” Rose wrote in the same email.

A public art committee was then formed and a public art competition was held so that the entire community could vote on what artwork should come to the city. The sculpture that received the most votes at the end of the competition will be placed on the SCC campus, while the runner-up sculpture will be placed in All-America Park.

This year Midsummer took second place.

Rose describes Midsummer as a “sculpture created to represent a moment of celebration in nature. The use of color and shape embodies growth, playfulness and change. Red and orange represent the warmth and growing season of summer. The blue is water.”

“We are excited to install our second sculpture at All-America Park and hope to continue bringing a new piece of art to this entrance to downtown Clinton each year,” Rose wrote.

It will replace last year’s runner-up, “Earth, Wind and Fire,” which was also created by Jubran.

This year’s competition winner was the sculpture “Blue Butterfly” by Benton and Sons. It will be installed in East Park on the SCC campus on Friday, August 23 at 10 a.m.
