Before she prepared to cheer on her team at Friday night’s football game, Bayside High cheerleader Haley Imel received a wonderful surprise on her 17th birthday.

Haley was reunited and surprised by her older brother Josh Imel, who had just returned from a ten-month U.S. Army deployment to Syria.

Before each home game this season, Bayside will honor a military graduate who is overseas or deployed. Haley knew the school was honoring her brother Josh, who will graduate from Bayside in 2022, but what she didn’t know was that she would see her brother on her birthday.

As Haley was escorted onto the field by her parents Chris and Jennifer, Josh ran after her and the siblings hugged each other, which was met with great applause from the crowd.

“I was really shocked. I don’t know, I had a feeling, but at the same time I was like ‘oh wow, he’s actually here,'” Haley said. “It didn’t feel real, I was so shocked and he was laughing, I wasn’t expecting that at all.”
