Lake Shawnee: Warning about blue-green algae

TOPEKA, Kansas (WIBW) – The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) have issued a health alert to the public due to blue-green algae.

Lake Shawnee has been included in the weather warning.

A harmful algal bloom (HAB) can look like foam, scum or paint on the water and can be blue, light green, brown or red in color.

If a person or pet comes into contact with algae, rinse the area with clean, fresh water.

The alerts will be lifted when cell density and toxin concentrations fall below the alert thresholds.
