Jersey Shore Beach Report: Clouds and Rain Give Way to Sunshine

Jersey Shore Beach Report: Clouds and Rain Give Way to Sunshine

JERSEY SHORE, NJ — After a week of heavy rain, a day at the beach is a nice respite. And the weather forecast could give beachgoers just the respite they’ve been looking for.

Here’s a look at the beach weather for Saturday and Sunday, August 10 and 11. The remnants of Tropical Storm Debby are expected to exit the area Friday evening, leaving only some surf impacts.

Moderate temperatures and some sunshine invite you to relax in the sand or play with the children from the house.

JELLYFISH
From the State Department of Environmental Conservation and the New Jersey Jellyspotters

The stinging nettles remain a problem and will continue to be so for the next few days. Paul Bologna, a biology professor and jellyfish expert at Montclair State University, said their sting is generally mild compared to many other jellyfish, but can be painful with multiple stings.

Bologna shared the following advice on treating jellyfish stings in the New Jersey Jellyspotters Facebook group, starting with a recommendation to bring white vinegar to bay beaches:

A basic treatment protocol:

  1. Apply vinegar immediately after the sting. This will stop any stinging cells that have not fired in the tentacles.
  2. Rinse the sting site with the salt water you are in (bay or sea) to gently wash away all the tentacles. DO NOT USE BOTTLED WATER FOR THIS, THE OSMOTIC SHOCK WILL INFLAMMATE THE WEB CELLS AND CAUSE THEM TO CONTINUE TO STING.
  3. Take a clean cloth/towel and wipe the area clean.

After that, depending on the severity of the sting, there are several ways to treat it: over-the-counter pain relievers, over-the-counter Benadryl-type medications, or calamine lotion for itching.
