The McDonough Library has reopened after an extensive renovation. Check out some photos of the new space!
The renovation was funded by a government grant and SPLOST V. The library will reopen in August 2024.
Renovation of the McDonough Library
The McDonough Library is located at 1001 Florence McGarity Blvd, near Highway 81. It serves as the central branch of the Henry County Library System. The building was originally constructed in 2001.
In 2019, the Henry County Library System asked county commissioners to allocate $100,000 from SPLOST V for renovations at the McDonough Library. The library system was able to apply for a state grant that would cover 90% of the cost if the county provided the local funds. Then-3rd District County Commissioner Gary Barham was instrumental in getting the $100,000 added to the county’s list of projects.
After securing local funding for the project, the library asked Senators Jones and Strickland for assistance in applying for a state grant. Their combined efforts paid off in 2022 when the state budget allocated $900,000 for the renovation of the McDonough Library. Combined with local funding, this provided a $1 million budget for the project.
The library was closed for renovations in December 2023. It reopened on Monday, August 12. MHF News stopped by this week to check out the new space. Check out some photos below!
