FOOD this week: Orange Morning Bun from Sugar Pine Cakery & Café

Deciding where and what to eat around the pool each week can be a challenge—there are so many great options. In this post, we’ll dive into dishes that are sure to satisfy your hunger and leave you wondering where to go next.

I love to cook. But when it comes to baking, the process always seems to be structured in such a way that I much prefer eating other people’s baked goods. Luckily, we have some great local options that allow me to do that—just like the folks at Sugar Pine Cakery, who are going all out with this week’s feature.

The fun starts with the homemade croissant dough, which is spread with a generous pinch of freshly grated orange zest in the middle. The croissants are then rolled up and left to rise in the prover until the dough rises before baking, giving it that Arnold Schwarzenegger-like quality. After baking, the croissants are taken out, allowed to cool slightly, and then dipped in a bath of orange juice glaze (a mixture of orange juice and powdered sugar).

Let’s just say that this morning roll is the reason the roosters get up to crow. Each layer is light and airy and so flaky that it feels like a sweet croissant. The orange zest gives the whole thing just the right amount of zing, but when you get to the frosting along with the zest pockets, it’s like an orange flavor rocket to your taste buds.

Although the orange flavor is prominent, it never feels too much—it’s tempered by the croissant dough, so you can enjoy a creamy, flaky, sweet and savory bite every time.

Even though I had already eaten breakfast at the time of this tasting, I told myself I wouldn’t eat it all…after every single bite…until I had eaten it all…then I couldn’t say it anymore. Oh well, it was worth every bite.
