Church of Jesus Christ announces celebration of President Nelson’s 100th birthday

SALT LAKE CITY – President Russell M. Nelson turns 100, and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints invites everyone to watch a program in his honor on his birthday.

The Church announced the “special birthday broadcast” in his honor on Friday – one month before his Sept. 9 birthday – through a press release and a letter from President Jeffrey R. Holland, acting president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, to Church leaders around the world.

“How grateful we are for a prophet of God, for his inspired teachings, and for his invitation to follow the Savior’s example of love and righteousness in all that we do,” said President Hollande.

He said President Nelson has called on everyone to help “the one” or someone in need on his birthday. The Church has invited its members to participate through its 99+1 campaign.

The 75-minute program begins at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, September 9. It will celebrate President Nelson’s life and teachings and provide examples of how members around the world celebrated his birthday with stories of “the one.”

In a recent post, President Hollande praised President Nelson’s “genuine, warm kindness.”

“I think he has to be the nicest man I have ever worked with—and I have worked with many good people!” he said. “As we seek to follow the Savior, we should follow the example of President Nelson’s Christlike character.”

The broadcast will be available on the church’s website, its YouTube channel and the Gospel Stream app with live interpretation in multiple languages.
