Uptown. Downtown. In people’s minds, these are not just different zip codes, but different planets with their own orbits, languages and even magazines. For 178 years Terms and Conditions is the epitome of Uptown, and over the last 40 years Paper embodies downtown. They always revolved around the same axis: New York City.

So we organized a wonderful dinner party and invited Paper Persons and membership cards of the club Terms and Conditionsa unique collaboration between two media institutions that have more in common than meets the eye. We have Paper OGs were Terms and Conditions Contributors and Terms and Conditions Cosplay Devices PaperAre they Paper-curious, but Terms and Conditions-forward? Maybe more like Paper-istas by day and City and country–ites at night.

Probably both. It’s all down to a change of wardrobe, a secret wink and handshake, and the international language of “invincible glamour,” as Guy Trebay puts it in his new memoir. Do somethingwhich describes an earlier version of the city, where all that mattered was being yourself, “in a world that, as someone once said, does its best night and day to make you into everyone else.” Maybe that city isn’t so gone after all. Maybe it’s right here, right now.
