The San Francisco 49ers suffered a setback in their pass rushing depth when Drake Jackson was placed on the reserve/PUP list earlier this week. They then conducted workouts with several players in hopes of finding a replacement. And they were able to do just that.
According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL NetworkThe 49ers have signed former Green Bay Packers pass rusher Jonathan Garvin to a one-year contract. Garvin played for the Packers from 2020 to 2022 and spent 2023 with the Birmingham Stallions of the UFL.

Coincidentally, Garvin beat out one of his former teammates, safety Rudy Ford, for the roster spot.

Garvin was originally selected by the Packers in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Although he made the team after training camp, he didn’t see much action. Garvin appeared in eight games this season, playing just 18% of the defensive snaps and 10% of the special teams snaps. He recorded just five tackles.
2021 was supposed to be Garvin’s best year in the NFL. In 16 games, Garvin played 39% of the defensive snaps, recorded 1.5 sacks and 19 tackles.
However, his playing time decreased in 2022. In 14 games, he played in 23% of the defensive plays and had only eight tackles.
The Packers released Garvin at the end of July 2023.

With no NFL team pursuing his services last season, Garvin signed with the Birmingham Stallions of the UFL. With the Stallions, he had his best season as a professional football player, recording 19 tackles and 3.5 sacks.
The 49ers are certainly hoping Garvin is an up-and-coming player. Jackon had 3.0 sacks in each of his first two seasons in San Francisco and defended eight passes as a rookie in 2022.
Garvin played college football at Miami, Florida, where he was a standout pass rusher. In 2018, he totaled 60 tackles and 5.5 sacks. The next season, his last in college, Garvin totaled 37 tackles and 5.0 sacks.
