Alaska Airlines flight attendants vote against union’s tentative agreement

SEATAC, Washington.Alaska Airlines flight attendants have rejected a tentative agreement supported by their union, requiring a revision of the proposals and new negotiations.

According to the Flight Attendants Association (AFA), 68 percent voted against the agreement, while 32 percent voted for it. The vote took place on Wednesday at 12 noon, with 92.4 percent of eligible voters turning out.

Because the majority of respondents did not agree with the agreement, the AFA Alaska Master Executive Council is now discussing next steps with the Negotiating Committee.

“This is our contract and we will fight to address member concerns as quickly as possible,” said a press release from the AFA Alaska Master Executive Council and Negotiating Committee.

The schedule of negotiations includes:

  • Create and send a survey to members

  • Analysis of survey results and preparation of revised proposals

  • Submission of revised proposals to the Master Executive Council for feedback and approval

  • Request additional mediation appointments with management and the mediator from the National Mediation Office.

  • Exchange of revised proposals with management

  • Participation in negotiations/mediation with the intention of achieving a second TA

  • Planning additional mobilization efforts to put pressure on management, increase influence and get additional money for a new interim agreement

It is not known how long these negotiations will last, but the negotiating committee says it will provide further details in the coming weeks.

This comes one day before the Justice Department is set to vote on the merger of Hawaiian Airlines with Alaska Airlines.
