As the eastern part of the Three-North Shelterbelt Forest Program (TSFP), a large-scale afforestation project, northeast China has seen continuous improvement of the ecological environment. China proposed in June 2023 to transform the TSFP into a fully functional and indestructible “green Great Wall” and ecological security barrier in northern China. In this aerial photo taken by a drone, a levee breach is sealed in Taipingdi town of Chifeng city in northern China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region on August 14, 2024.

The dyke breach on a river in Inner Mongolia was closed at 2:13 p.m. on Wednesday without any casualties, the local drought relief and flood control center said.

The dike breach, which was over ten metres wide, occurred on Tuesday at around 12:40 p.m. on the Laoha River in the Taipingdi township of Chifeng city. Over 800 residents had to be evacuated and around 600 hectares of farmland were affected.

More than 800 rescue workers from the armed police, fire department, public security, disaster prevention and other departments have been mobilized to fill the gap. (Xinhua/Bei He)
