History is often considered a boring subject that is all about dates and places. In his book, A History of South India for Children: From Prehistory to Vijayanagara, author and historian Pradeep Chakravarthy demystifies history and tries to bring to life the life and culture of bygone times.

Talking about the book at an event organised by the Madras Book Club in the city on Wednesday, Mr. Chakravarthy and Nirmala Lakshman, Chairman, The Hindu Group Publishing Private Limited, gave the audience an insight into the aspects covered in the book and highlighted interesting facts from the pages of history.

In 12 chapters, people from all walks of life are introduced – from kings and courtiers to sculptors, builders and spiritual leaders. The 400-page book explores history from prehistory to the Vijayanagara period and is peppered with illustrations, flow charts and photographs.

Noting that every page of the book is peppered with wise and balanced perspectives, Ms Lakshman said it was a careful attempt to bring fascinating chapters of history alive for the next generation in an unbiased way, especially in today’s era of polarisation and distortion of the past.

Asked about the genesis of the book, Mr. Chakravarthy said that history books often do not delve deeper into the lives of people in the past. The book explores South India’s rich heritage through its various chapters, including on clothing, entertainment, literature, science and technology, and religion, simplifying history for young and adult readers alike.

The author read excerpts from the book and also touched upon the difficulties in bringing to light details documented in various texts in South Indian languages and Sanskrit. Many manuscripts are waiting to be translated in Kerala, he said.

Although children’s interest in history books is increasing, many of them know very little about India’s history and heritage, he added. The book is available both online and in stores.
