Fortunately for the New York Giants, promising rookie running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. appeared to have avoided a serious lower leg injury after being carted off of practice on Tuesday, so they can maintain their plan of using a running back group, which could lead to strong results for their running game in the 2024 season.

The Giants have an exciting group of running backs

The Giants signed Devin Singletary as a free agent to fill in at running back following Saquon Barkley’s departure. Singletary was solid last season with the Houston Texans, rushing for 1,091 yards, scoring four rushing touchdowns and averaging 4.2 yards per attempt. Additionally, Singletary has been one of the game’s most consistent running backs over the past few seasons, something that wasn’t always expected from Barkley.

But in addition to him, New York could also heavily incorporate Tracy and second-year running back Eric Gray into its offensive scheme, as both have shown tremendous potential as dynamic running backs in training camp and the preseason.

The Giants could use Eric Gray in an important role this season

Gray, in particular, was outstanding in the season opener against the Detroit Lions, recording 98 yards from the offensive zone and two rushing touchdowns, one of which was a 48-yard run in the open field. He also caught a 24-yard pass down the sideline in the same scoring drive.

If he continues to perform well in the preseason, Gray could be a key part of the Giants’ offense in the regular season. He is an effective runner and receiver, which would be huge for the team as they look to increase their big play production next season.

Tyrone Tracy could be an important player for the Giants in 2024

Tracy is a running back who successfully transitioned to the position after playing wide receiver at Iowa. After transferring to Purdue, he became a full-time running back but also had success as a receiver. In his senior year at Purdue, Tracy totaled 848 yards from the offensive line, had eight rushing touchdowns and averaged 6.9 yards per pass as a receiver.

The 24-year-old has the profile of a change-of-play running back who can come in and produce positive results in any role he is assigned. Tracy could bring a new face to the Giants’ offense, and his versatility as a runner and receiver gives them another option if head coach Brian Daboll wants to open up his playbook a bit.

The Giants will be looking for major contributions from all of their running backs this upcoming season, and the guys they have in that running back room could become an exciting core of players who are key pieces of a much-improved offense. They will have their next opportunity to showcase their talents in the Giants’ next preseason game on Saturday against the Houston Texans.
