The show, produced by Ryan Murphy, will premiere on FX next month

The tragic life of the late football player and convicted murderer Aaron Hernandez will get the Ryan Murphy treatment in FX’s new series this summer, American Sports History: Aaron HernandezThe series, limited to 10 episodes, premieres on September 17th.

A trailer for the show, which Murphy is an executive producer on, shows Hernandez, played by Josh Andrés Rivera, battling mental illness, fighting his temper, dealing with the physical trauma of playing football and, of course, brandishing a gun. Patrick Schwarzenegger plays Tim Tebow in the show, while Tammy Blanchard portrays Hernandez’s mother, Terri. And everyone in the clip seems gripped by the suspense. It’s the kind of trailer where a clock ticks in the background behind the scenes, and the ticking gets faster and faster as the pitch rises, suggesting an explosive ending.

“You don’t know what’s going on in my mind,” Hernandez says in the trailer. “It’s like a demon.”

Interestingly, Murphy does not formulate the story under his American crime history Banner. The football player joined the New England Patriots in 2010 as a tight end. Three years later, he was arrested and charged with the murder of his friend Odin Lloyd. He committed suicide in prison in 2017. His death came two days after he was acquitted of another double murder charge. Autopsies revealed that Hernandez suffered from stage three CTE (a head trauma common in football players), which was classified as severe.

Accordingly diversityStu Zicherman developed the show based on the podcast Gladiator: Aaron Hernandez and Football Inc. The series follows another about Hernandez, Killer Inside: The Ghost of Aaron Hernandezwhich premiered on Netflix in 2020.
