Let the sunshine in with “It Color” 2024

Let the sunshine in with “It Color” 2024

Welcome to Someone Buy This!, a monthly shopping column featuring fun, witty and practical things from a very discerning shopper.

Yellow is all the rage in interior design right now. Design enthusiasts have declared a shade of yellow (butter yellow) to be the “it color” of 2024. So it’s no surprise that I’ve become addicted to yellow lately, especially when buying furniture and home accessories. This started with rather inconspicuous pops of yellow and evolved into more permanent and expensive additions to my home, such as a yellow drinks fridge.

As I explored my yellow interior design ambitions, I struggled with the nagging feeling that I would “regret” it later. Would my love for this color change? Would it eventually hurt my eyes? Should I keep it more neutral? Eventually, I decided that while it’s important to invest in pieces that I’ll use and love for a long time, I shouldn’t be afraid to take creative risks in my space.

Colors, especially bright colors, can seem intimidating. While butter yellow is a relatively safe entry point to the lightest shade on the color wheel, here are some ways you can trick yourself into going brighter and bolder.

For yellow newbies: You don’t know the color yellow yet, but want to add some color to your room.

BONDSKÄRET Wardrobe

BONDSKÄRET Wardrobe

The tree-like shape of the BONDSKÄR clothes rack was designed by Rutger Andersson in 1978. Back then it was still called SMED. An example of IKEA icons in new colors in the Nytillverkad collection.

This coat rack from Ikea is an inexpensive and easy way to try yellow. The Nytillverkad was originally designed in 1978 and reissued last year in three colors: black, lavender and yellow. I use it in the kitchen to hang shopping bags and aprons.

Speaking of Ikea, chances are you have an old (insert Ikea name here) piece of storage furniture that has seen better days. I refreshed two 8-year-old Kallax pieces with these yellow furniture feet from an Etsy seller. It’s incredible how much better they look when they’re slightly raised.

Quiet City, Sun Shower 2x2 - Butter

Quiet City, Sun Shower 2×2 – Butter

Introducing the Sun Shower 2×2, inspired by the graphic grout lines of our favorite tile – the 2″ x 2″ grid. Customize it with stripes, patterns, or let it fill the space on its own.

Quiet Town’s tinted shower curtains are no doubt all over your Instagram feed. Their newly released “2×2” curtain is the perfect way to add a pop of yellow to your bathroom. In my experience, the sheer curtain (which I pair with a sheer liner) makes my bathroom and shower feel so much larger. I will never go back to a solid color shower curtain!

Store books, magazines, or even records in this vintage Yaffa basket, named after its designer, Yaffa Licari. Licari and her husband designed countless household products for their plastics company, Basic Lines Inc., in the 1970s and ’80s. Search “Yaffa” on Etsy and take your pick!

For Yellow Experts: You’ve gotten past the first yellow bout and are ready for a bigger commitment.

Moccamaster KBGV Select - Yellow Pepper

Moccamaster KBGV Select – Yellow Pepper

The selector switch on the KBGV Select allows you to choose between preparing a half or full pot. The brewing speed and the hotplate temperature are adjusted according to your choice so that both quantities are brewed in the golden cup.

My love for the Moccamaster coffee maker is well documented. When I got one, I couldn’t believe I had gone so long without it. My only regret is that I didn’t buy it in yellow. I was too cowardly and went for silver and have regretted it ever since. Learn from my mistake and brighten up your countertop with the best coffee maker in the best color.

Linen duvet cover “Schoolhouse”

Linen duvet cover “Schoolhouse”

Known for its durability and simple look, this beautiful, intricate linen duvet cover only gets better with age. The texture of the fabric and the tone make this collection as timeless and versatile as can be.

A yellow duvet can be a big challenge depending on the size of your bed and the room. I encourage you to take the plunge! Schoolhouse’s beautiful yellow linen duvet is bright, but not neon. Linen is often thought of as summer bedding, but I think it works year-round.
