Former magazine publisher, editor and author Dennis Brent dies

Dennis Brent, who held many positions over his decades in the industry, died last Sunday at the age of 73.

Longtime friend and confidant Jim Ross announced the news of Brent’s death during a service held today in Dallas, Texas.

Brent graduated from the University of Texas with a concentration in radio, television and film.

Brent’s entry into the profession came through his work at a software company he owned, PowerSoft Products. The company’s services included printing, and he met Percy Pringle (Bill Moody), who oversaw the distribution of programs for World Class Championship Wrestling in Texas. Brent was chosen to take over the programs because he had a background in desktop publishing, which was his bridge to professional wrestling.

Brent also oversaw programming for Mid-South/UWF and published both promotional programs. After Turner Broadcasting purchased Jim Crockett Promotions in November 1988, Brent was hired to head the publications department.

He worked for WCW for five years, where in addition to the magazine, he was also a ringside photographer and ran the 1-900 hotlines, which were a major revenue generator and involved various WCW personalities. He stayed with WCW until July 1994.

His close friend Jim Ross was in charge of talent management for the WWF and Brent was hired in the summer of 1998. His responsibilities included booking talent for personal appearances, contributing heavily to the company’s website and magazines, and serving in talent management roles.

In 2004, Brent authored the biography of Steve Austin, The Stone Cold Truth, which made the New York Times bestseller list.

Brent was diagnosed with MS in 2006 and lost his ability to walk.

Brent was honored by the Cauliflower Alley Club in 2015 with the James Melby Pro Wrestling Historian Award, presented by Terry Taylor.

Brent is survived by his wife Lynn; the couple were married since 1978.
