‘Don’t come to the US’: Indian engineer warns students of delays in visas and green cards

“There is no future after completing the training,” the user wrote.

A software engineer of Indian origin living in Texas recently issued a stark warning to students considering studying in the US. On X (formerly Twitter), user Suren voiced his concerns, warning that applying for an H1B visa after graduation could become a full-time job, with the wait time for a green card being a staggering 100 years. His comments came in response to a post by US Ambassador Eric Garcetti announcing the upcoming Education USA Fairs being held across India. In a video, Mr. Garcetti invited students and parents to meet representatives from over 80 US universities to learn about admissions and scholarships.

In response, the X user urged prospective students to reconsider their plans. “Please don’t come to #USA. These are lies. You don’t believe me? Talk to anyone who has come here to study in the last decade,” Suren wrote. He also expressed that many students’ hopes would be dashed after completing their studies, stressing, “There is no future after completing your education.”

Furthermore, the X-user elaborated on the difficulties faced by Indian students in the US. “You will spend your entire career chasing H1B visas. For people born in India, the waiting period for green cards is about 100 years,” he said.

The post was shared on the microblogging site just a few days ago and has since been viewed over 670,000 times. His remarks resonated with many social media users who shared his sentiments about the challenges of obtaining visas and green cards.

“I agree! I live in the US and moved here from India 21 years ago. Times were different back then. Now it’s India’s time in the next two decades and smart people will be more successful here than in the US. I completely understand that people go to top universities in the US because of better education or better lifestyle (infrastructure, healthcare, less population density and pollution, cleanliness). But smart people with good education and talent have more opportunities in India in the next decade or so. Waiting for a GC in the US is horrible! It’s not worth it unless you are going there just because of the above factors. Immigration is a big problem now more than ever, especially for ‘legal immigrants’,” wrote one user.

“Legal immigration is a disaster and many of my friends have been waiting for a green card for over a decade,” said another. “The Indians who now plan to come to the US for higher studies will have to renew their #H1B visas all their lives and will always be at risk of losing their jobs. No green card for Indians #GreenCardBacklog,” commented a third.

“And don’t come to Canada either. You will get citizenship. But now it is completely unaffordable and many people are unemployed and we all know the law and order situation,” a fourth user added.
