Yahoo has shut down its news operations in India due to foreign direct investment

Yahoo is an American web services company. Yahoo shut down its news service in India on Thursday, August 26, stopping the publication of content across the country. The website is owned by Verizon Media. The company assured its users that their Yahoo accounts, emails and searches would not be affected in any way.

“Starting August 26, 2021, Yahoo India will no longer publish content,” said a statement on Yahoo India’s homepage. “Your Yahoo account, email address and search functionality will not be impacted in any way and will function as usual. We thank you for your support and readership.”

According to the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section on Yahoo’s website, the company has decided to stop publishing all content in India, ending Yahoo’s content operations in the country. “We did not make this decision lightly,” Yahoo said. The company’s activities in India are also impacted by recent changes to the country’s regulatory laws, “which now restrict foreign ownership of media companies that operate and publish digital content in India.”

Due to changes in laws limiting foreign sponsorship of more than 26% in digital news media, Verizon Media has decided to shut down Yahoo India’s operations. As per the new IT laws, Yahoo India would also have to restructure its entire media operations. This has to be done within a certain time frame to be able to run the news and current affairs industry in the country.

Yahoo thanked all Indian users for their “support and trust” over the years and also stated that the change will not affect Yahoo Mail or Yahoo Search, which will “continue to be available to users in India as before and without any changes.”
