Summary

  • Batman
#151 introduces a new costume for cosplayers that is easy to recreate and not too expensive.

  • This casual cosplay option is an inexpensive and practical alternative to more elaborate and expensive Batman costumes.

Cosplayers have Batman for their latest costume option. Cosplaying is a popular pastime for many in the comic book community. However, it’s also an expensive pastime that can seem intimidating and overwhelming since the perfect costume can cost so much. Luckily, cosplayers on a budget now have the perfect alternative thanks to Batman’s new “casual” look.

Batman #151 by Chip Zdarsky and Mike Hawthorne features the title character in a brand new costumebut one that should be easy for the average cosplayer to copy and implement. In the midst of the Absolute power Event, where Amanda Waller asserts her power as DC’s newest threat, Batman recruits Catwoman’s help to steal a Mother Box hidden on the island of Okinawa, north of Waller’s base on Gamorra. Batman suggests they go undercover as private military contractors for Sentryglobe. Once he removes his disguise as Mr. Blackwell, the end result is the perfect costume.

Batman appears at a military base

In a classic quick change, Batman sheds half of his military contractor disguise and appears in his cowl, displaying his Bat symbol, but still wearing his white shirt and business casual pants. Without the cape and other accessories, this half-dressed costume look would be the perfect casual cosplay.

Batman’s costume as a disguised soldier is simple enough to wear for any cosplayr who can accessorize using whatever clothes are lying around in the closet. The cowl is perhaps the only “expensive” piece of clothing in this ensemble. On average, a decent cowl should cost between $15 and $40 at any online store. That is, unless a cosplayer chooses to make their own, which is doable, but the most cost-effective and least time-consuming option is to purchase an affordable mask elsewhere, especially considering that Batman wears his iconic cowl even in his most “casual” looks.

This costume is tailor-made for Batman fans who want to dress up as their favorite character.

All that is needed for the upper body is a simple white button-down shirt. Most people have something like this lying around in their closet, for example as a work shirt or for other formal occasions. Finally, the lower part can be finished off with any trousers (ideally simple black trousers, maybe even green cargo pants to match the army look) and combat boots underneath. All are accessories that are either already in someone’s wardrobe or buy cheap online.

Batman has worn many costumes over the years, so much so that the glass enclosures in his Batcave are often depicted with several options to choose from. However, the intricate details that most of these costumes contain can often be challenging for Batman cosplayers to produce themselves, mainly due to the money and details involved. That is why this General Batman look is so refreshing. It is as if this costume was tailor-made for Batman Fans who want to cosplay their favorite character without having to spend too much money.
