Green activist attacked and robbed near Berlin

A Green Party campaign worker was attacked and robbed on the outskirts of Berlin on Tuesday.

The attack occurred around 11:30 a.m. (09:30 CET) in Hohen Neuendorf in the eastern German state of Brandenburg, where elections will take place in September.

As the Märkische Allgemeine reported, a 68-year-old Green Party campaigner was approached and verbally attacked by an unknown man, who then pushed him to the ground and stole his bag with election brochures.

The alleged perpetrator then fled, leaving the activist slightly injured.

Special police groups responsible for politically motivated crime have taken over the case, said a police spokesman in the eastern German state of Brandenburg.

Green Party spokeswoman Anne Schumacher condemned the attack and called it cowardly and unacceptable.

The Brandenburg police report a significant increase in attacks on politicians this year.

From January to March alone, 75 politically motivated crimes against public officials and party representatives were registered, the state interior ministry said. In the same period in 2023, the number was 55.

In a notable recent incident, Adeline Abimnwi Awemo of the Christian Democratic Union was subjected to racist abuse and attacks while putting up posters in the eastern German city of Cottbus, where the Cameroon-born politician has lived for more than 20 years.

The violent incidents occurred amid a record election year for the state, with state elections due to be held on September 22 following European and local elections earlier in the year.
