St. John’s women’s basketball team releases schedule for 2024/25 non-league season

The St. John’s women’s basketball team on Monday announced its 11-game non-league schedule for the 2024-25 season, which includes six home games and two away games against local opponents.

The full schedule is below, with kick-off times and broadcast information to be announced later:

  • Wednesday, December 11th: Away vs. Hofstra at Mack Sports Complex (Hempstead, NY)
  • Sunday, 15 December: Home game against Fairfield at Carnesecca Arena (Jamaica, NY)

This non-conference schedule includes two key games: a first-round game in Happy Valley against Penn State on Monday, December 2, and a home game against Wake Forest on Sunday, December 8. Last season, the Nittany Lions had a successful 22-13 (9-9 Big Ten) season and reached the semifinals of the inaugural Women’s Basketball Invitational Tournament (WBIT). The 2023-24 season has not been as good for Wake Forest as the Demon Deacons look to rebound from a dismal 7-25 (2-16 ACC) season.

There is only one non-conference opponent that made it to the NCAA Tournament last season: Fairfield, who the Red Storm will face at home on Sunday, December 15th.

Led by three-year head coach Carly Thibault-Dudonis, the Stags are coming off their best season yet. Fairfield finished with a record of 31-2 (including a perfect 20-0 conference record), started a 25-game winning streak, appeared in the AP poll rankings for the first time in program history, and earned an automatic berth in the 2024 NCAA Tournament. Ultimately, the Stags lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to 4th seed Indiana.

After reaching the NCAA Tournament and winning its first game in the Big Dance in a decade in 2023, St. John’s missed the cut for the tournament last season, finishing with a record of 18-15 (7-11 in Big East). However, the Red Storm made it to the WBIT by defeating Florida 79-60 in the first round before losing to Toledo 72-71 in the second round.

Head coach Joe Tartamella’s team lost key fifth-year players Unique Drake and Jillian Archer, but returns former UMass transfer and point guard Ber’Nyah Mayo for her final collegiate season after she averaged 10.9 points and 3.5 assists last season.
