Fenton – Downtown Fenton was packed late afternoon and evening on Thursday, August 8th for the Back to the Bricks Fenton Tune-Up Party.
Hundreds of car enthusiasts lined the streets of downtown Fenton with their vintage cars. Organizers estimate that thousands of people walked through downtown to admire the historic vehicles and enjoy the atmosphere. The event included food trucks, a 50/50 drawing for charity, a concert featuring Leave Those Kids Alone and the farmers market on Thursday.
DJ Scott Kool provided music and announcements.
These tune-up parties build excitement ahead of Back to the Bricks’ Main Event Week, which takes place this week.
Fenton resident Mike Hussar brought his 1968 Pontiac Catalina four-door car to the event. He bought the car in 2001 when it had 31,000 miles on it.
“I wasn’t really looking for a car, but it showed up. I thought, ‘Well, I’m retiring or about to retire, I need something to do.’ So I got this one,” he said. “I’ve had a lot of work done on it. I like it. It’s what people used to drive. It’s a four-door sedan. It’s a family car…not many people put the time and money into restoring one of these things or keeping it nice because it’s not a fancy, fast car.”
He has driven in the Fenton Freedom Festival parade for Fenton Boy Scouts Troop 219 and Fenton First Presbyterian Church since 2005 or 2006, missing only one year since then when he had trouble and needed a new ignition switch.
Hussar has been participating in Back to the Bricks events for years. He said the event has been better organized in past years.
“The fact that they brought so many cars here today in the time they had is a testament to the quality of these organizations,” he said. “I like looking at the cars and talking to the people. I may never see them except at the car shows, but eventually you make friends.”
