Fans of CRPGs who discovered the genre before the release of Baldur’s Gate 3 have probably played at least one title from Owlcat Games, the developer behind works such as Pathfinder: Kingmaker and Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader.
Simply developing these games is apparently no longer enough for the company: Owlcat announced that it wants to enter the publishing business – and has already signed two projects.
Owlcat will publish Rue Valley from Serbian developer Emotion Spark Studio and Shadow of the Road from Polish developer Another Angle Games, both of which were selected by the newly formed publisher from more than 50 potential partners.
Rue Valley is a short narrative RPG about a man trapped in a time loop while undergoing therapy. He must face his mental challenges and delve deeper into the mysterious anomaly to break free and unravel its secrets.
Shadow of the Road is an isometric RPG set in feudal Japan – or rather, an alternate history version of it. It features turn-based tactical combat, a story about samurai and honor, a world filled with magical yokai and dangerous steampunk technology, and some horror elements.
“We want to work with teams that share our passion for telling compelling stories through narrative-driven games,” explained Andrey Tsvetkov, Head of Publishing at Owlcat. “These may not fall entirely into the RPG genre, but they will definitely have a strong focus on story, characters and world-building. We’ve already started down the path to developing our dream game and now have the expertise and resources to guide other teams to the games of their dreams as well.”
Owlcat plans to announce more information about both signed projects at Gamescom 2024.
In addition to its own publishing activities, Owlcat recently acquired its former partner META Publishing, with whom it worked on Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous – further news on the label’s upcoming games is also expected in Cologne.
Owlcat’s next release will be Void Shadows, the first DLC for Rogue Trader.
