Curating the MakharLighting, flowers and more is a fun creative activity that everyone gets involved in. And while thermocol and plastic are no longer in fashion, it can be difficult to find something that looks and feels good. So Local Samosa headed to Sarvangi Arts in Thane to check out their eco-friendly Ganpati decor made from traditional Indian fabrics.

An artist’s vision

Sarvangi Arts is the vision of a commercial artist Mr Sandesh Gaonkar which was launched with the support of his family. What started as a passion project 7 years ago is now a thriving part-time venture that sells out every year. “As an artist, I have always tried to create something unique. Today, I have two decades of experience in an advertising agency and now in a corporate. I also juggle Sarvangi Arts as a side business,” he elaborated. The success of a product can be measured by the acceptance it gets from the audience. And the brand continues to receive praise year after year.

The use of traditional Indian fabrics

The Marathi TV series of 2017 Swarajyarakshah SambhajI was the catalyst for the inclusion of Ilkal as a fabric for the decor. Mr. Gaonkar said: “Since the era of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharajwe have seen that Ilkal is part of everyday use.” Ilkal saris are bright and offer a novel canvas.

New to the environmentally friendly collection this year is the Shahi Lakhotaa velvet-based piece, available in purple and red. It has gold elements such as a border and pearls as well as the line “Sarvangi Sundar Uti Shendurachi“ from Ganpati Bappa’s Aarti.

The Ilkal Circle Makhar is quite unique with a foldable fan-like part that can be assembled quickly and without any problems. There is also the Paithani Circle which is unfortunately sold out. These are also available in two colors.

One sold out creation was the mirror based backdrop piece. It consisted of a number of pieces with beautiful colors, designs and mirrors. In some regions, it is said that Ganpati Bappa should have a mirror behind him. You can see this idea reflected in the decor Nana Patekar does for Ganesha in his home.

Apart from that, Ganpati Bappas Capricorn (a style of dhoti-like pants) are also made in bright, vibrant colors, so the brand has opted for colors that complement all of these.

Easy to ship, store and assemble

The entire Makhar fits in a medium-sized box and is really easy to assemble. The weight of the box does not exceed 5 kg, which is ideal for transportation. Internationally, the volumetric weight is 4 kg. The kit also includes an assembly manual, which makes assembly easy for anyone. Mr. Gaonkar mentioned: “It won’t take you more than 5 minutes to put it all together.”

The Makhar Options also include matching bolster covers in the same color and fabric. “We took a path of invention and filled the charging pads with air instead of using cotton. The goal was to make the whole package lightweight and easy to store after the holidays,” explains Mr. Gaonkar.

Delivery around the globe

You can make your choice from Makhar online or through WhatsApp. The order will be delivered to you by August 30th, giving you plenty of time to arrange the rest of the decoration. Sarvangi Arts has partnered with DHL so they can deliver to the US in 5 days and to Australia and the UK in 7 days. The products have become such a huge success that consumers are gifting them to their loved ones.

The Ilkal Lakhota is priced at Rs 3,200, the Ilkal Circle and Shahi Lakhota are priced at Rs 4,100 and the Mirror Backdrop Piece is priced at Rs 5,000. “We have kept the prices below Rs 5,000 so that it is affordable for everyone. We have also kept the collection small and used bright and beautiful colors that people usually prefer,” shared Mr. Gaonkar.
