Shortlist for Readings Children’s Book Prize 2024 announced

The shortlist for the Readings Children’s Book Prize 2024 has been announced.

The six books on this year’s shortlist are:

  • The lonely lighthouse of Elston-Fright (Reece Carter, illustration by Simon Howe, A&U Children’s)
  • Back and forth (Anton Clifford-Motopi, A&U Children’s)
  • Pull yourself together, Doris Kozlowski (Jo Dabrowski, Affirm)
  • Wurrtoo: The wombat who fell in love with the sky (Tylissa Elisara, illustration by Dylan Finney, Lothian)
  • Spies in Heaven (Beverley McWilliams, Pantera)
  • Batthew Aromascent and the missing corpse flower (Ella Mulvey and John Roebuck, Hardie Grant Children’s Publishing).

The Readings Prizes were first launched in 2014 and aim to “support and promote new and outstanding Australian voices”. The prizes are awarded to first and second author writers. Categories include the Readings Children’s Book Prize, the Young Adult Book Prize and the New Australian Fiction Prize.

The winners of each category will be announced at an event on October 22. Each will receive $5,000. The Gab Williams Prize, selected by the Readings Teen Advisory Board from the Young Adult Book Prize shortlist, will then be announced on October 29. The winner will receive $1,000.

Last year’s winner of the Readings Children’s Book Prize was Maryam Master for No words (Pan).
