“It Ends With Us” is a huge success, Borderlands flops

August continues to bring in big numbers. Blake Lively’s adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s novel It Ends With Us was a huge success, grossing a whopping $50 million from 4,230 theaters. That’s a big step up from Sony’s Crawdads ($17 million) and further proof that female-led dramas, especially those inspired by books, do well at the box office.

As great as that number was, Lively couldn’t top her husband Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool & Wolverine, which grossed $54 million in its third weekend and has now grossed $1.029 billion worldwide. The Marvel team-up action/comedy has a long way to go if it wants to surpass Inside Out 2 ($1.593 billion) as the highest-grossing film of 2024. Currently, Shawn Levy’s film ranks 48th among the highest-grossing films of all time worldwide.

Eli Roth’s video game adaptation Borderlands flopped with $8.8 million. Ouch. The $110-120 million film received terrible reviews (9% on RottenTomatoes) and failed to generate much interest despite its Guardians of the Galaxy-esque atmosphere.

According to Deadline, NEON’s “Cuckoo” ultimately grossed a solid $3 million on a $7 million budget.

Fede Álvarez’s Alien: Romulus hits theaters this week, and numerous experts predict that the film will gross between $35 million and $50 million in its opening weekend. Will summer 2024 end with a bang?
