Detroit Lions HC says QB room will look very different in the near future

Detroit Lions HC says QB room will look very different in the near future

The Detroit Lions finally got it all together in 2023. For the first time in three decades, the Lions not only won the division, but also played (and won) two playoff games. For 2024, the Lions expect to be back in the championship conversation.

However, there could be a change in the quarterback room in the near future.

The Detroit Lions could sign a quarterback in the near future

Lions quarterback Hendon Hooker suffered a concussion during Sunday’s 14-3 loss to the Giants. Campbell told reporters before the team’s practice on Saturday that he hopes to be back by Sept. 8, when the season begins. There could be another new addition on the way, however:

“Yeah, honestly, we don’t know where he’s going to be. He won’t be out there today.” Campbell said“We probably won’t have him tomorrow, and it’s looking less like we’ll have him in practice this week through Friday. We’ll get him ready for the Chiefs, and that’s not a guarantee until he passes the concussion protocol, then we’ll wait on him.”

Campbell hinted that the team may have to decide quickly whether to bring in another quarterback to share time with Sudfeld in the next preseason game.

“We talked about it this morning,” Campbell said. “It could be decided today or tomorrow down the stretch. There’s a possibility, and I think we’ll have a pretty good idea this afternoon if we need to do that, just to make sure we have a player other than Nate (Sudfeld) for the game.”

The Lions head coach said he was encouraged by what he saw from Hooker, who is expected to serve as the second quarterback behind Goff this season.

“There were some encouraging things there,” Campbell said. “He was able to move the offense down the field, he saw some things, had a high throw, did a good job on one of his forays kicking the ball to the running back and made a couple of runs there. So for the few appearances he had with a very limited offensive package, he showed promise.”

It will be interesting to see what kind of competition the Lions field while Hooker is out. The Lions will hope to create the best possible situation behind Goff in case he has to miss some time this season.

We have seen many times that teams have been able to stay afloat in the race for the playoffs when their starting quarterback was out, but the replacement was able to stay afloat.
