Actor and comedian Dick Van Dyke is living proof that age is just a number. On April 19, 2024, the 98-year-old star became the oldest person to receive a Daytime Emmy nomination (he guest-starred on “Days of Our Lives” earlier this year). Van Dyke’s resume proves he’s far from retirement. In fact, in addition to his potentially trophy-worthy stint on the daytime series, he also appeared on “The Masked Singer” and “The Simpsons” this year.

Van Dyke’s career spans more than seven decades, and fans have seen his work on television (“The Dick Van Dyke Show”), on the big screen (“Mary Poppins”), and on bookshelves (2010s My life in and outside of show business: A memoir was a New York Times Bestseller) and on stage (“Bye Bye Birdie”).

So what is the secret of his charisma, enthusiasm and acumen as he approaches 100?

Shortly after the publication of his book in 2015 Keep moving and other tips and truths about agingVan Dyke told the Chicago Tribune that a key factor is staying active. He gets up at 6 a.m. every morning, has a cup of coffee and “goes to the gym before I talk myself out of it,” he says in his typical humorous style. “If you exercise, move, get your circulation going, you leave the gym feeling better… Get your circulation going and it changes you. I can go to the gym feeling pretty crappy, but I leave with a spring in my step and feeling pretty good.”

At the gym, Van Dyke swears by the treadmill and weights (yes, he still lifts weights at 90!). After his sweaty workout and when he’s in a feel-good mood, he usually hits the market, runs errands, and then heads home for a quick nap before dinner. Then before bed, he always lets his inner child settle down.

Dick Van Dyke’s favorite dessert

Throughout the day, Van Dyke told the Chicago Tribune team, he avoids overly processed foods and fast food, preferring instead to eat “light and fresh” food. “I watch what I eat. I don’t eat a lot of meat, maybe once a week. Every morning I eat blueberries. I watch my blood sugar levels,” he said.

As a child, Van Dyke always dreamed of growing up and being able to eat candy every night. This inner child is still alive and well, he added: “There is the biblical admonition to put aside the things of childhood. But I understand that to mean self-centeredness and stubbornness; not creativity and wonder,” Van Dyke continued in his conversation with the Tribune. “Walt Disney and I always said we were children in search of our inner adults.”

To indulge his inner child, Van Dyke gloated, “I eat ice cream every night.”

His favorite combination: two scoops of Häagen-Dazs vanilla, garnished with a generous dash of chocolate syrup.

Keep moving and other tips and truths about aging is all about how to stay vital and make the most of your 60s, 70s, 80s and beyond, Van Dyke summed up, and it sounds like balance — and dessert — is definitely part of that magic formula.

We take what he takes.
