Jarrell Green, 27, was killed while crossing Front Street in Hempstead

A 27-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed while attempting to cross Front Street in Hempstead on Saturday afternoon, Nassau police said in a news release.

Jarrell Green of Hempstead was crossing the street from south to north near the West End Professional Building shortly after 4 p.m. when he was struck by a 2004 Honda traveling west on Front Street, police said.

Green, who suffered a traumatic brain injury, was taken to a hospital where a doctor pronounced him dead at 8:32 p.m. The driver of the Honda, a 20-year-old woman, remained at the scene of the crash and no charges have been filed against her, police said.

He is at least the 24th person to die in a fatal car crash on Long Island this summer, according to a Newsday database of accident information released by police. At least 28 deaths have been reported on Nassau County roads in 2024, according to the database.

Green was someone who “gave more than he took,” his sister Jodianne Lumpkin, 28, said Sunday.

“When he faced challenges, he had a hard time asking for help,” said Lumpkin, who lives in Portland, Maine, and grew up in Elmont.

“He always wanted to give back,” she added. “Whether it was money, whether he needed a place to sit or a phone call, he always made the phone call more encouraging. He always tried to be the one on the phone to cheer you up. He didn’t always expect anything from you.”

Her brother was in the process of “finding himself” and wanted to start his own business at some point.

“He looked at things as if there was always going to be a need for certain things, and he saw himself capitalizing on that,” Lumpkin said. “He had a lot of ideas, but he wasn’t able to really focus on those things because he was still busy getting on his feet.”

The investigation is ongoing.
