After a week of news about the casting of the second season, here is how the One Piece team surprised Iñaki Godoy for his birthday.

After a week that brought us plenty of casting news for Season 2, we get a behind-the-scenes look at showrunners Joe Tracz and Matt OwensNetflix, Tomorrow Studios and Shueisha’s live-action series adaptation of the manga creator and series consultant Eiichiro Oda‘S A piece. But this is not just a look behind the scenes – we get an insight into how the production surprised Inaki Godoy (Who killed Sarah?), also known as Monkey D. Luffy, on his birthday – and about the great cake that was served for the occasion.

In July, Tomorrow Studios President Becky Clements shared some key production and casting updates for season two. In terms of production, Clements notes that they are (at the time of the interview) in their third week – filming is set to continue “into December.” As for when the season will be fully finished and ready for big screens, fans will have to be patient – Clements added, “This is a very VFX-heavy year, so it’s going to be a while. We’re not done yet.”
Referring to the recent rounds of casting that confirmed Smoker, Brogy, No. 5, No. 9, No. 3 and other characters for the series, Clements noted that the character names should give fans “a pretty good idea of what we’re covering this season when you look at the chapters.” The Tomorrow Studios president added, “(Showrunner) Matt (Owens) and Joe Tracz, our new co-showrunner, are great partners who are well-aligned on all aspects of the show. They’ve got everything planned out and Oda was very involved again this season, so that was great.”

Clement confirms that several seasons are still planned: In response to previous comments that they have enough source material for at least six seasons: “We have those plans. Matt Owens has them in mind, it’s just up to our partners, who have been great and want to keep moving forward, but we are prepared creatively, I can say that.”

Good news/bad news about Jamie Lee Curtis and Dr. Kureha: Clements reveals that Jamie Lee Curtis’ busy work schedule and the production schedule for season 2 aren’t matching up. “She (Jamie Lee Curtis) loves the show. She has too many movies and TV shows that she’s starting production on that our production dates don’t work out. She definitely wanted to do it, but she’s got contracts coming up and it just got complicated.” But it looks like they’ve signed someone else for the role – and Clement teases, “We found a great person.”
Also in the second season are Brendan Sean Murray like Brogy, Callum Kerr as a smoker, Camrus Johnson as Mr. 5, Clive Russell like crocus, Daniel Lasker as Mr. 9, David Dastmalchian as Mr. 3, Jazzara Jaslyn as Miss Valentine, Julia Rehwald as Tashigi, Robert Colletti as Wapol, Ty Keogh as Dalton, Werner Coetzer as Dorry, Katey Sagal as Dr. Kureha, Mark Harelik like Dr. Hiriluk, Sendhil Ramamurthy as Nefertari Cobra and Charithra Chandran (Bridgerton, Alex Rider) as Miss Wednesday.

Godoy had a lot more on his mind in May than just wishing “the greatest, coolest, most inspiring pirate to ever sail the Grand Line” a happy birthday – as we’ve now officially learned. Check out the cake in the video below… and how it looks like a candle… and then we have the “3” at the top, which Godoy lights – before giving us a mischievous smile. Of course, this must mean that for season 2, we’re getting “Loan Shark” Galdino, aka Mr. 3 (former Baroque Works agent – alongside partner Miss Goldenweek – and main antagonist of the “Little Garden Arc”). After eating the devil fruit Doru Doru no Mi, Mr. 3 develops the ability to create and control wax.
