Interior designer and presenter Whinnie Williams is a master of daring bedroom design. With her signature vintage-inspired designer style, she has transformed numerous bedrooms for filming and TV shows. She is currently renovating her own bedroom and shares her secret to making a bedroom look like it was decorated by a designer.
The creative director of interior design brand Poodle & Blonde and guest designer on Channel 4 Changing Rooms recently joined Dreams as an interior design expert and shares the latest trends, expert tips and innovative ideas to help you create the perfect retreat for a restful night’s sleep. In conversation with Ideal homeshe revealed that one of her favorite ideas for small bedrooms is wallpapering the ceiling.
“I love wallpapered ceilings. It’s a really easy win,” says Whinnie. “I think you instantly look like an interior designer when you wallpaper a ceiling.”
If the idea of trying out wallpaper ideas on your bedroom ceiling seems anything but a no-brainer, as Whinnie claims, the trick to success lies entirely in the design you choose.
“When you choose a wallpaper, you want it to work from every angle. I think there’s nothing worse than choosing a wallpaper that only works in one direction,” she explains. “Like the leaves are growing in the wrong direction. I think the key is to choose an abstract print, whether it’s marbled or geometric.”
However, Whinnie warns that this might be a DIY project you shouldn’t tackle alone. “I love it when people get to work and put up the wallpaper themselves, but ceilings are the hardest, so if you’re going to do it yourself, get plenty of helping hands.”
Alternatively, this could be a good opportunity to use a peel-and-stick wallpaper or at least a self-paste wallpaper. The last thing you want is to have unsightly drops of paste dripping into your hair.
Before you’re tempted to play it safe and go for a subtle color, Whinnie says the trick is to just try it.
“You can be bold with colour, I wouldn’t be afraid. You don’t have to go for a bright colour. The wallpaper is very simple: you pick your favourite wallpaper, something that really speaks to you, and then you can use all the colours from that to create the rest of the room,” she stresses.
“Be brave and just dare.”
If there was ever a compelling argument for wallpapering your ceiling, this is it.
