Lil Jon turns the DNC calls into a party with “Turn Down for What”

Lil Jon brought some excitement to Georgia’s roll call at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday. The “Yeah!” rap star surprised the Chicago crowd by appearing with the Georgia delegation and performing his hit “Turn Down for What.”

After Georgia was asked to vote, the lights dimmed and Lil Jon appeared with a drawn-out “Yeaaaaah!” He joined Representative Nikema Williams, who represents Georgia’s 5th Congressional District, in announcing that Georgia would cast its 123 votes to nominate Harris for president.

“Ladies and gentlemen, we are here tonight to officially nominate Kamala Harris for president,” he declared before rapping the opening lines of his 2013 hit: “Fire up that loud/Another round of shots … DNC, turn down for what!”

The entire arena danced and jumped to Lil Jon’s performance as the rapper walked through the crowd giving high fives to the audience, then had the arena chanting “We’re not going back! We’re not going back!”

Lil Jon then revamped his surprise performance by performing the chorus of “Get Low,” changing the lyrics to “VP Harris to the Walz!”

Rhode Island played “Shake It Off” by Taylor Swift, New Jersey played “Born in the USA” by Bruce Springsteen, Nebraska played a snippet of “Firework” by Katy Perry, Massachusetts played “I’m Shipping Up to Boston,” New Mexico played a snippet of “Confident” by Demi Lovato, and New York played “Empire State of Mind” by Alicia Keys and Jay-Z. Lil Jon’s performance comes a day after Mickey Guyton and Jason Isbell represented country music on the main stage. Guyton performed her 2021 song “All American” and Isbell performed “Something More Than Free,” the title track from his 2015 album.

On the first night of the DNC, President Joe Biden delivered a keynote address, and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Representative Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson also spoke in support of Vice President Kamala Harris.
