Article overview

  • Jamie S. Rich, Filip Sablik and Jeremy Haun team up with Eric Gitter to start a new comic book publishing company.
  • Rich and Sablik’s departure from their positions at IDW and Boom Studios fueled industry speculation about the deal.
  • Gitter’s history of successful comic book adaptations promises a strong multimedia component for the new publishing house.
  • The name of the company and initial release plans are still under wraps. More details will be announced soon.

Over two months ago, I first learned that the editor-in-chief of the IDW Jamie S. Rich had abruptly resigned on the eve of the release of their record hit of the year, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1, in the press. Then, two weeks later, I also learned that Boom Studios’ longtime President of Publishing and Marketing Filip Sablik had handed in his resignation – and wanted to build something new with Jamie S. Rich before the publishing house was taken over by Penguin Random House.

Tonight, THR confirmed the Bleeding Cool scoop that first surfaced in late June and was all but confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con: Sablik and Rich have indeed teamed up for something new. Not surprisingly, they’re starting a brand new comic book and graphic novel publishing company. Perhaps a little surprising, they’ve managed to keep the identities of their other two partners in this new project secret from the comic book rumor mill and my usual sources this entire time.

Writers and artists Jeremy Haun As Creative Director, he completes the trio of comic veterans in the new publishing company and will probably also contribute new series to the offering. In addition to his extensive work as an artist at Marvel and DC over the course of his twenty-year career, Haun has created a number of successful original products, including The beauty And The Empire at Image Comics, 40 seconds at Comixology and then at Dark Horse Comics, and Red Mother And The approach at Boom Studios. The exclusive announcement also highlights Haun’s entrepreneurial and business acumen, which is probably a good indication of why he is a central figure in this new publishing house.

Film producer Eric Gitterwho apparently recruited Sablik, Rich and Haun to form this new publishing company, has a similarly long history with comics. More than a decade ago, he partnered with Oni Press to bring their works to Hollywood, which led to film adaptations of Bryan Lee O’Malley‘S Scott Pilgrim, Atomic Blonde (the title was changed from the graphic novel The Coldest City by Antony Johnston and Sam Hart) and a doubleheader of extraction (renamed from City from Ande Parks, Joe and Anthony RussoAnd Fernando Leon Gonzalez). Over the years he has also developed other comic-related projects, including Cullen Bunn And Brian Hurt‘S The sixth weapon, Enemy of the State with Rashida Jones, The author from James Callahan And Rick Spears with Taika Waititi And Jude Law. And as far as I know, that’s just the tip of the iceberg of projects Gitter is currently developing. So there’s no specifics on the new publisher yet, but there will clearly be a film and TV component.

The combination of Rich, Sablik, and Haun’s network of talent and business relationships, coupled with Gitter’s track record of adapting comics to film, will certainly make the new publisher one to keep an eye on. After all, unlike most new publishers, they don’t have to build a Hollywood connection from scratch. From what I hear, talks with high-profile creators have already begun, so it will be interesting to see who’s on their initial slate. My main complaint right now is that they still haven’t told us what the company is called, which makes writing headlines a little harder…

The new company is represented by WME and lawyers Fred Goodman And Rich Marin by Marin Goodman, LLP. Additional details, including the name of the publisher and its publication plans, will be announced at a later date.
