Patrick Mahomes credits Ian Book’s ability to eat pizza to building Chiefs culture

The Kansas City Chiefs have won two Super Bowl titles in a row. They’ve played in the AFC Championship Game six straight seasons. Patrick Mahomes just tries to mix things up in training camp. Sometimes that means everyone goes out for pizza.

Enter Ian Book. The former Notre Dame quarterback was drafted in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints. He spent time with the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles before signing with the Chiefs in January. He’s making an impression in his first training camp with Kansas City.

Book completed 8 of 9 passes in the team’s first preseason game. At one point, Mahomes said, he also ate nine slices of pizza. The team goes out for pizza several times during training camp. On their first outing, Book was outboxed. When they returned, he tasted glory.

“I think Ian Book ate like nine slices of pizza yesterday,” Mahomes said. “I had to calm him down because the first time we went to the O-line, he only got one slice because the O-line ate all his pizza. He didn’t go in until the last day. That kind of thing builds that bond and then you get those jokes and stuff for the rest of the year. That’s what makes our culture great.”

Basically, Ian Book outsmarted Kevin McCallister. And the story of his revenge cake will create a connection that will lead the Chiefs right back to another Super Bowl. And if they win? Forget the parade and have a pizza party. Is it too early to Book It?
