Green Day at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois

Green Day at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois

Seeing Green Day perform at Wrigley Field in Chicago is becoming a summer tradition, and we can fully support that.

It is unbelievable that Green Day‘S Dookie celebrates its 30th anniversary and American Idiot celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. To celebrate these two milestones, Green Day is on tour playing both albums in full. The tour is called The Redeemer Tour in honor of their fourteenth studio album, which they released in January, so they probably recorded quite a few songs from it.

Wrigley Field seems to have become the home of Green Day concerts, and every time they come to town, fans flock. It’s a great sight to see the Friendly Confines sell out, and so is the age range of fans in attendance. They attract all ages, young and young at heart. At these larger shows, people on the field often stand up, while people in the stands usually take their seats. This show was completely different. Even those sitting way up in the rafters seemed to be on their feet, all fully engaged with the performance on stage. It’s a great feeling to be in the middle of a crowd where everyone seems to be having the same fun. At one point, people as far as the eye could see were jumping up and down to the beat of the music, making the whole of Wrigley Field vibrate and shake.

Billie Joe Armstrong is one of the best frontmen. He interacts with the crowd non-stop and is a ball of energy. For two and a half hours he sang his heart out with the energy of a 20-year-old. Even though they had to cancel a show just days before because Billie Joe had lost his voice, he sounded great as they rattled off an impressive 37-song setlist, possibly the longest we’ve ever seen! Between songs, Billie Joe would always start singing a cover, such as “Jack & Diane” by John Mellencamp, “Free Fallin'” by Tom Petty or “Surrender” by Cheap Tricks. The entire crowd immediately accepted the task and sang along with their hearts. He clearly had them all in the palm of his hand. Mike Dirnt was not afraid to interact and bring energy. He was often seen jumping around on stage. Tré Cool also made his presence felt behind his drum kit at the back of the stage. However, he was given the opportunity to come front and center to enjoy his big moment in the spotlight as he sang “All By Myself,” which earned him thunderous applause and cheers.

On previous tours, Green Day has been joined by Chicago’s Fall Out Boy. This time, they were joined by another local band, The Smashing Pumpkins. Billie Joe joked that they would tour with the Chicago band next time. No matter who they put on the bill, fans will no doubt still come in droves. This was an entertaining show for the ages that was truly enjoyable for all ages.
