On July 21, Zionsville residents had the opportunity to learn about diabetes treatment and prevention at Zionsville Lions Park.

The Diabetes Awareness and Family Fun Day combined entertainment and education and attracted several hundred participants for a day full of exciting activities and important health screenings.

Family-friendly activities such as bouncy castles, arts and crafts and yard games served as a backdrop to the program’s mission to raise awareness of diabetes.

During the event, Lions conducted diabetes screenings on 92 people, including risk assessments, glucose testing and A1C screenings – a measurement of average blood sugar levels over an 8- to 12-week period.

According to the Lions, the proactive approach led to the identification of some participants with elevated blood sugar levels who were previously unaware of their possible condition.

“We provided these individuals with guidance on next steps and encouraged them to contact their healthcare providers for further evaluation and support,” Lions officials said in a press release. “The success of the event was not just in the numbers, but also in the impact. We were able to provide important health information in a friendly, accessible environment, ensuring that many went home with a better understanding of their health and the importance of regular diabetes screenings. The fun activities created a relaxed atmosphere, making it easier for participants to connect with our health professionals and take advantage of the screening services offered.”
