In an unusual move, Hakusensha’s editors are urging readers to “learn about love” with the popular ecchi manga this summer. Ecchi.
North American fans would recognize this manga as Tokyo Pop’s ambitious 2008 release. However, many retailers did not stock the title because it contained adult content.
A major campaign has been launched on the Young Animal Web, offering readers free access to 78 volumes Ecchi.
The editorial team sees this as a unique opportunity and encourages its readers with the message: “Learn about love on summer nights with the summer courses for adults ‘Yellow Chart’ and ‘White Chart’!”
The campaign is divided into two parts:
- From 13 to 19 AugustThe first 40 volumes, recognizable by their yellow covers, are now available free of charge.
- From 20 to 26 AugustVolumes 41 to 78, marked with white covers, will also be available for free reading.
Although it seems unusual for a publisher to promote an erotic series as an educational tool, Hakusensha takes advantage of the dual nature of manga.
Ecchi is known not only for its erotic content, but also for its educational value. The series serves as a guide to sexual intercourse and intimacy, interwoven with a narrative.
The manga is a huge success in Japan and chapters are still being published in Hakusensha’s magazine “Young Animal”. There are 29.5 million copies in circulation and 91 volumes have been published as of June 2024.
The story follows a newlywed couple in their mid-twenties who were virgins before marriage and explore their sexuality together. The manga contains factual statistics and insights, making it as informative as it is entertaining.
The title Ecchi (“Ecchi for two people”) is a play on the slang term for self-stimulation, “Hitori Ecchi” (“Ecchi for one person”), and emphasizes the theme of shared intimacy and discovery within a relationship.
