Jets sign former Rams tight end and release injured linebacker to make room

The New York Jets have made two changes to their roster following their preseason win over the Washington Commanders.

On Sunday afternoon, the Jets released rookie linebacker Jimmy Ciarlo and then signed tight end Neal Johnson, who is in his first year and was released by the Los Angeles Rams earlier last week.

After going undrafted, Johnson agreed to terms with the Rams before rookie minicamp in May. He was released to make room for an offensive lineman.

Johnson played five years for Louisiana Lafayette, playing in 59 games in his career. The reliable receiver caught at least one pass in his last 26 college appearances. He moves to the Jets’ tight end squad one day after reserve tight end Kenny Yeboah was moved to fullback.

Ciarlo played four special teams snaps against the Commanders before being forced to abandon his NFL preseason debut at MetLife Stadium. The homegrown product suffered a knee injury on a Jets punt in the third quarter and was ruled out for the rest of the game.

Ciarlo, a native of Bergen County, New Jersey, competed for Army at the collegiate level and had a partially guaranteed contract with New York.

The Jets return to practice at Florham Park on Monday morning ahead of their Aug. 17 road game against the Carolina Panthers.
