According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the emergency landing was due to an overflowing bathroom.

However, American Airlines attributed the disruption to a “maintenance issue.”

“On August 7, American Airlines Flight 36, operating from Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) to Madrid (MAD), was diverted to New York (JFK) due to a maintenance issue,” the airline said in a statement.

“The plane landed normally and is scheduled to depart again on (Thursday) evening with another aircraft.”

“We do not want to disrupt our customers’ travel plans and apologize for the inconvenience.”

After the plane landed safely, American Airlines reportedly paid for hotel accommodation for the affected passengers.

The customers were then rebooked on a flight to their destination the next day.

The FAA is still investigating the incident.

American Airlines’ diversion came after another popular airline was forced to ground its flight.

In July, a Delta Air Lines plane en route from Detroit to Amsterdam had to make a stopover at John F. Kennedy Airport after several passengers became ill.

A Delta spokesman told the Daily Mail that passengers were served spoiled food.

“Delta flight 136 was en route from Detroit, Michigan, to the Netherlands when it was diverted to JFK Airport early this morning after some of the in-flight food was discovered to be spoiled,” the spokesman said.

“This is not the service Delta is known for and we sincerely apologize to our customers for the inconvenience and delays to their travels.”

After the flight landed, the aircraft was met by paramedics and cared for nearly 25 passengers and crew members.

“There were 24 cases of aiding and abetting during the landing,” a port authority spokesman told the news agency.

“This included ten crew members and 14 passengers, all of whom refused medical treatment.”

After disembarking from the flight, customers were provided with hotel rooms and rebooked on another flight to their destination.

The US Sun has asked the FAA for comment.

Customers affected by the emergency landing were allocated a hotel and rebooked on the next flight the following day.
