The ferry MV Flanders, one of two vessels that carry passengers and cars to and from Bell Island in Conception Bay, Newfoundland, is out of service after a fire broke out in the engine room early Thursday afternoon.

In a statement on Thursday evening, Maria Browne, spokeswoman for the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, said that there were no injuries, but eight crew members were taken to hospital as a precaution. The fire was extinguished by emergency services shortly after it broke out, said Browne.

The Portugal Cove-St. Philip Fire Department responded to the fire

Browne said the department is assessing the damage and cause of the fire, and the Flanders is out of service until further notice.
