Eagles News: A Growing Threat in the NFC East?

Eagles News: A Growing Threat in the NFC East?

Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles Left …

Jayden Daniels brings momentum to Commanders debut – Hogs Haven
Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels was one of the standouts from Washington’s season debut against the New York Jets, completing a 40-yard pass to receiver Dyami Brown. On the previous pass, Daniels had badly botched a screen pass to Austin Ekeler, so it was good to know he could quickly get rid of whatever it was (mechanics, nerves, etc.). Daniels eventually completed the opening drive and scored a touchdown against a read-option keeper, allowing the starting offense to leave the game with a relatively clean and efficient possession. Among the other standouts was Dyami Brown, who scooped up the ball from Daniels on the sideline in the scrum. Brown has been involved in a position battle throughout training camp and had a very positive performance in the first practice game.

Jayden Daniels needed a drive to give Washington Commanders fans hope – SB Nation
When the Washington Commanders last selected a quarterback with the second overall pick in the NFL Draft, it ushered in what noted ESPN analyst and former Washington Post writer Tony Kornheiser called the “land of unbridled optimism.” When Robert Griffin III got off to a great start as a rookie, it propelled fans of the franchise to new heights of hope. A new era of unbridled optimism could be dawning, and rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels — the second overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft — needed only one drive in his first preseason game to fulfill that hope. Daniels and the Commanders opened their preseason slate against the New York Jets on Saturday at MetLife Stadium, and that first possession couldn’t have gone better for the visitors.

NFL Prep Week 1: Insights into top players, schedule – ESPN
Washington got what it hoped for from its most important acquisition, rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels. He played just one series, and that was against New York’s second-string defense — and without using Washington’s top three offensive tackles. But Daniels’ one series had the Commanders smiling. He completed 2 of 3 passes for 45 yards and scored a 3-yard touchdown run. On a third-and-6 attempt, Daniels changed the play at the line of scrimmage, switching off a screen and throwing a go ball to Dyami Brown on the right side. On the touchdown run, the safety wasn’t fooled by the zone-read fake, but Daniels was too quick to the outside and easily scored a touchdown.

Update on the Eagles’ 53-man squad after the first preseason game – BGN
WR: AJ Brown, DeVonta Smith, Johnny Wilson, Britain Covey, Parris Campbell (5) (11). Brown and Smith look fantastic. Maybe even better than ever? The depth behind them…not so much. Wilson has been used with the first team on offense; he can certainly be useful in certain situations, but it’s a bit much to ask to count on him as a full-time player from the start. Covey looks like he could be an adequate ball receiver and a very good punt returner as well. Campbell’s value has dropped while he was out with injury, and he very well may not make the club if he continues to be in the tub. John Ross was good, but he’s hardly a must-have. The Eagles will likely look to bolster that position via a trade before the season starts. For now, I’m keeping Campbell as a placeholder.

In Roob’s observations: Will Nakobe Dean get a chance to beat Zach Baun? – NBCSP
5. I’m not sure there’s anything Tyler Steen can do to reclaim the right guard spot at this point. The Eagles seem to have decided that Mekhi Becton is the right guy. Steen lost the job after getting injured and missing a week and a half, and when he came back, Becton had become the starter, and Steen hasn’t started practice with the first offense since. It also looks like his ankle is still bothering him. The thing is, if Becton becomes right guard, the Eagles will lose their best backup tackle on either side. What backup do they have that can play tackle? Steen makes the most sense. He was tackle in college, and when we see him taking reps with the second tackle group, we know he can’t compete at right guard anymore.

Behind the scenes: A look at the Eagles’ equipment staff – PE.com
Greg Delimitros schedules a game and pulls out a long, laminated calendar. He doesn’t call plays for the Eagles; instead, Delimitros has to prepare in a locker room (actually, several locker rooms) and a team of players has to make sure the equipment is properly outfitted. “Let’s see,” says Delimitros, the team’s vice president of equipment operations, on his offensive in the massive equipment area attached to the team’s NovaCare Complex locker room. “We’re trying to be two weeks ahead. Obviously, we have to prepare for our first preseason game. We have one practice at the stadium and that’s a little session in and of itself. Right now, Liverpool is using our locker room (at Lincoln Financial Field, where they’re preparing for a “friendly” against Arsenal).

4 truths and 1 big question about CeeDee Lamb’s contract saga with the Cowboys – Blogging The Boys
This is the part that isn’t clear. Going back to truth #3, there is something in all of these details that the two sides disagree on. Eventually there will be a compromise and a deal will finally happen, but we’ll never know what caused the delay. If it’s like many of the Cowboys’ other deals, chances are we’ll like it. Lamb will get his bag and the Cowboys will get their star receiver under their player control for years to come. Soon after, we’ll all forget this ordeal even happened.

Tommy DeVito has a good chance of being included in the New York Giants’ 53-man roster – Big Blue View
In the season opener with most of the regulars rested, New York Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito made a strong case for his spot on the roster with a crucial performance on Thursday against the Detroit Lions. DeVito, who filled in for the injured Drew Lock late in the first quarter, completed 8 of 15 passes for 92 yards and orchestrated two first-half touchdowns in a 14-3 win. DeVito, the Giants’ No. 3 quarterback, is battling for a spot on the 53-man roster. In his first two years as head coach, Brian Daboll has only kept two quarterbacks. “Every day is a step in the right direction. I try to build on that every time I step out on the field and have a chance to be on the field,” DeVito said. “It’s kind of crazy to stand here now and know that a whole year has passed.” DeVito came into the game earlier than expected.
