Robert Downey Jr. returns to Tony Stark in a surprising way

Robert Downey Jr. is not done with Tony Stark, even though he hasn’t been part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2019 Avengers: EndgameEven though he has a new role coming up in the MCU, Downey isn’t letting go of Stark yet.




Disney revealed many surprises as part of D23, The Ultimate Disney Fan Event 2024, and one of them is that Robert Downey Jr. isn’t done with Iron Man yet. While the actor is returning to the MCU as a supervillain after his role as Doctor Doom, Downey will also be part of an upcoming Disney attraction called Stark Flight Lab, IGN reports. So far, the actor won’t be reunited with the rest of the Avengers, but it will give fans a chance to see Tony Stark again.

Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the MCU came as a surprise to many, with the exception of Fantastic Four director Matt Shakman.


Day 1 of D23 was full of new announcements and previews of upcoming projects, whether from Disney, Marvel Studios or Pixar. Day 2, on the other hand, included details on Disney’s attractions and news that all characters will get a platform in one of the many parks. And Tony Stark will now be part of the Avengers Campus at Disneyland in California.

With several attractions made popular by the MCU films, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes will get several exciting locations, including the Stark Flight Lab. The official description on Disney’s website reads: “You know Tony, he always wants to try something new and exciting, and you’ll feel like a superhero yourself. With the just announced Stark Flight Lab, You will sit in two-person capsules and be taken to a test station. Then a robotic arm will grab your capsule and start spinning you around in a simulated flight.”


The official description was: “A familiar face will accompany you to the Stark Flight Lab – Mr. Stark himself. Robert Downey Jr. will reprise his role as Tony Stark for the attractions in the land.” There is currently no official release date for the Stark Flight Lab attraction, which will be one of the two Marvel rides; “Avengers Infinity Defense” will also be released soon.

Tony Stark almost returned in Deadpool & Wolverine

Robert Downey Jr. took a break of several years from the MCU, received his first Oscar for his role in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimerand will return to the world of superheroes in a new role: as a supervillain. Downey Jr. will make his debut as Doctor Doom in the upcoming avenger Films, 2026 Avengers: Endgame and 2027 Avengers: Secret Warswhich means the Russo brothers are back in charge.


Before the announcement, there was another possible project for Downey Jr.: a cameo in Deadpool and Wolverine“There was a conversation early in the film to bring back Tony Stark, where Deadpool is arguing with Happy Hogan in Avengers Towers and asking him to join the team.”This is definitely something we have played with“, confirmed co-writer Rhett Reese in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.”The MCU obviously had bigger plans for Downey, as we just learned, namely the Doctor Doom thing. Ultimately, I think that’s why it didn’t happen, although I don’t know the real reason. There were talks. Downey and Jon Favreau were supposed to be in the scene together.”
