The Update | The YSU Art Faculty exhibits works

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – “Legacy: 58 Years of YSU Art” opens September 3 at Youngstown State University’s McDonough Museum of Art and runs through October 26.

The season opening exhibition will include projects by current and former art teachers and staff.

A reception will be held on Friday, September 6, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the museum, 525 Wick Ave. Admission is free. The museum is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The artists featured in this exhibition not only pass on their knowledge and expertise to the next generation, but also use their creative energy to maintain a high level of professional practice, creating work that has been exhibited across the country. This exhibition is an opportunity for the YSU community to celebrate these visual artists who have shared their talent for over 50 years.

The artists represented in this exhibition are Samuel Adu-Poku, Claudia Berlinski, Joy Christiansen Erb, Amy Copeland, Dragana Crnjak, Debra DeGregorio, Joseph D’Uva, Chauncey Hay, Ashley Johnston, Alyssa Keil, Russell Maddick, Missy McCormick, Christine McCullough, Richard Mitchell, Greg Moring, Michael Moseley, Michelle Nelson, John Guy Petruzzi, Stephanie Rhodes, Susan Russo, Dana Sperry and Amanda Spinosa.

The Eras Ball benefits the theater

SHARON, Pennsylvania – Eras Ball, an immersive video experience featuring the music of Taylor Swift, will take place Saturday, Sept. 7, at 7 p.m. at the ACTS Performing Arts Center downtown.

The event features music, dancing and community spirit while supporting the Shenango Valley arts community.

ACTS will be unveiling its new digital LED wall at the event. The cutting-edge technology will be used to bring the Taylor Swift concert experience to life. Attendees will be treated to a sing-along dance party where fans can belt out their favorite hits.

There will be a costume contest where fans are encouraged to dress in their favorite Taylor Swift “era.”

The evening will also feature local vendors and activities including:

  • Pizza from the hometown.
  • The Block by Nova Destinations serves drinks to those 21 years of age and older.
  • Locke and Key Boutique is hosting a pop-up shop with exclusive Taylor Swift-themed merchandise.
  • Wildwood Weddings & Portraits offers a selfie station.
  • The Shenango Valley Community Library offers a friendship bracelet making station.

All proceeds go directly to ACTS and support the upcoming season.

Admission is a $20 donation. Tickets can be purchased at actspac.org or at the door.

Mill Creek Landscapes, shell art on display

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – “Painted Memories,” an exhibition of paintings by local artist Beth Basista, opens September 1 at the Weller Gallery in the Davis Center, Fellows Riverside Gardens, and runs through October 16.

The exhibition includes over 40 colorful paintings in oil, acrylic and watercolor techniques, most of which capture the landscapes of Mill Creek Park.

Admission is free.

“I hope my works inspire others to enjoy this gem of a park in the city of Youngstown and to appreciate those who preserved its natural beauty for us, like founder Volney Rogers and all who followed his mission to protect this incredible place,” said Basista.

The artist’s unique shell art flowers and shell art paintings are displayed in the gallery’s entryway. She begins with an acrylic or watercolor painting of an underwater world, beach, or sunset on canvas. She then creates fish, turtles, dogs, a seahorse, or “beach girls” out of shells and attaches them to her painting, followed by the occasional epoxy finish.

The gallery is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be an artist reception on Sunday, September 15, from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.

In addition to the more than 50 originals for sale, prints are also available for purchase at the Shop in the Gardens at the Davis Center in Fellows Riverside Gardens.

Fall Tourism Events Guide for Ohio Travelers

COLUMBUS, Ohio – As travelers focus their vacation plans on spooky attractions, Oktoberfests and strolls through pumpkin patches with apple cider, TourismOhio has released its fall events guide.

Now available online at Ohio.org, the guide highlights five standout events from each of Ohio’s 88 counties, showcasing a total of 440 events. Organized by month and region, the guide is a guide to discovering Ohio’s most unique fall adventures.

Farmers market for the start of school

SHARON, Pa. – The Downtown Sharon Farmers Market will present a back-to-school market on Saturday, August 31, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at its new location in the pavilion next to Quaker Steak & Lube, 101 Chestnut Ave.

The children’s activities are provided by the Sharon Robotics Teams, the First Presbyterian Church of Sharon and Wholly Natural Microgreens.

Michael Kovach provides live music.

The market also offers the Farmer’s Dollar program, where all children in attendance receive a one-dollar coupon that can be spent at any of the vendors.

Warren Philharmonic offers free lessons

WARREN, Ohio – The Warren Philharmonic Orchestra is offering free violin lessons to a select group of third through seventh grade students in Trumbull County through its Strings of Joy program.

The application deadline is September 30th. The course begins on October 6th and ends in May.

An application form and related documents can be downloaded HERE. They are also available at the WPO office, 154 N. Park Ave. There is no fee for selected applicants.

“The Frank R. Bodor Strings of Joy program continues the Orchestra’s outreach to area school children,” said Barry G. Dunaway, Orchestra Executive Director. “The Orchestra will perform a live concert for area students in October and encourage them to attend our public concerts in October and April.”

The program was named in honor of attorney Frank R. Bodor.

The orchestra loans each student an age-appropriate violin and offers 30-minute private lessons on Sunday afternoons through May. Group lessons and performance opportunities are also offered occasionally. The orchestra provides free sheet music to students. Classes are held at Christ Episcopal Church, 2627 Atlantic St. NE. The teacher is Jenna Barvitski.
