The United flight had to make an emergency landing at Memphis International Airport in the US state of Tennessee at around 2:40 p.m.

Flight UA1196 experienced “a brief period of severe turbulence,” United Airlines said in a statement to ABC News.

The airline said the turbulence occurred when the seatbelt sign was illuminated.

This problem was first reported by the crew when the flight took place over Louisiana.

After the emergency landing, the aircraft was met by paramedics at the gate.

One of the passengers was taken to the hospital, but his condition was not critical, according to the Memphis Fire Department.

Six other passengers refused medical treatment, but the extent of their injuries is unknown.

According to ABC News, United reported that there were 172 passengers and seven crew members on board that Boeing 737-900 at the time.

“We are grateful to our crew for their efforts to ensure the safety of our employees and customers,” United Airlines said.

This aircraft took off later and resumed its flight to Chicago on Wednesday afternoon.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said it would investigate the incident.

According to NBC affiliate WMAQ-TV, passengers on the flight recalled their horrific experience on board.

“I travel a lot, but I have never experienced a flight like this,” said passenger Gustavo Nouel.

Another passenger recalled how a flight attendant was almost thrown against the ceiling during turbulence.

“People were really hurt. Our clothes are stained because there were food scraps everywhere,” said leaflet employee Patrick Froh.

“It was one of the most traumatic things.”
