Play Airlines introduces in-flight sales technology

Following a successful trial of Bluebox’s Blueview digital service platform, Icelandic low-cost carrier Play Airlines has now rolled out the in-flight sales system across its entire fleet of 10 Airbus A320neo and A321neo aircraft. The airline, which flies from Iceland to destinations in Europe and North America, has used Blueview as a channel to increase ancillary revenue.

Blueview was deployed on the Bluebox Wow portable wireless network system. The trial involved integrating Blueview with the airline’s retail and payment platforms, provided by Most, its retail partner, to enable digital ordering of food from the bistro menu and retail catalogue at the seat. Passengers can connect to the network and use the browser-based portal to browse and select from Play’s retail offering and make secure payments on their own devices.

“This was a great addition to our in-flight service, which was praised by both our passengers and our cabin crew,” said Sonja Arnórsdóttir, CCO of Play. “The hard numbers proved the value of Blueview in increasing sales, but there were also other benefits – such as the ability for passengers on our night flights to easily order products whenever they wanted and the exceptional support from the Bluebox team throughout the trial period – that convinced us that the in-flight sales system is just the beginning of the value we will generate through Blueview on board and an excellent partnership with Bluebox.”

Play’s deployment of Blueview is based on the platform’s in-flight retail capabilities, but the airline also chose to incorporate Bluebox’s moving map technology, games and passenger survey features.

“For the full launch, we have focused on improving onboard sales and can now explore new ways to expand the potential of Blueview and other services that add value to PLAY and its passengers,” added Kevin Birchmore, Vice President of Global Sales at Bluebox. “Discussions are already underway about additional media and other ancillary services.”
